Big picture

CamStudio 3.1 Beta isn't just one new feature. It's a wider round of improvements that make the app easier to control, easier to understand, and much more dependable when you actually sit down to record.

New controls and quality-of-life features

  • You can now pause and resume recordings with a shortcut. That means you don't have to stop and start a whole new recording just because you need a quick break.
  • There's a delayed-start countdown, so you've got a few seconds to get your screen, app, or talking points ready before the recording begins.
  • New quality presets make it easier to pick a setup that suits your machine. If you don't want to think about lots of recording settings, this helps you get going faster.
  • There's also a one-shot recording mode for people who want quick repeatable captures or simple automation.

Better audio choices

  • You can choose your microphone device inside CamStudio and adjust the microphone volume there too, which makes setup a lot less awkward.
  • CamStudio 3.1 Beta can now be used in more flexible audio combinations. You can record just your mic, just the app audio, both together, or no audio at all.
  • Application-local audio capture is part of the 3.1 story too. That lets you focus on the sound from the app you're recording instead of everything happening on your PC.

Safer and smoother recording

  • Recording files are handled more safely now. CamStudio writes to a temporary file first and then finalises the finished video, which helps reduce the chance of broken output.
  • It does a better job checking whether your output folder is writable and whether there's enough space before recording starts. That should mean fewer nasty surprises.
  • Hotkey problems are easier to spot, and startup messages are clearer when something isn't configured properly.

Reliability has been a big focus

  • A lot of work in 3.1 Beta has gone into making recordings stop properly and finish properly. That sounds simple, but it matters a lot in real use.
  • Browser recording has had special attention, especially where Chrome and video playback were causing trouble in earlier builds.
  • There's also a built-in manual update check and stronger behind-the-scenes diagnostics, so keeping up with newer builds and tracking problems is easier than before.

Smaller but still useful additions

  • The app and branding have been cleaned up so CamStudio feels more like one consistent product instead of an older project with bits bolted on.
  • The About area, Donate options, settings polish, and update messaging have all been improved, which makes the whole thing feel more complete.
  • Older config naming has been handled more gracefully too, so moving forward to newer builds is less messy.

Outstanding issues

  • The main known rough edge right now is mixed single-track audio. On some setups, recording microphone audio and app audio together can still produce a bit of mild crackling.
  • Microphone-only recording and app-audio-only recording are looking cleaner, so the remaining issue is mostly around combining both into one track.
  • It's still a beta, so a few rough edges, wording changes, and smaller bits of polish may still change before the final 3.1 release.

Ready to try CamStudio 3.1 Beta?

If you want the latest fixes now, this beta is worth a look. But make sure you give it its own folder, otherwise it will try to use the same supplementary files as V3. If you'd rather wait for the most polished public release, that's fair too.
