When CamStudio is installed in the default location of program files, when the users try to record a video, it won't record, as they don't have read/write access to the temporary video folder in program files. I then noticed a recording options within CamStudio to point the save location to another location. I have been unsuccessful at integrating this into a package, and if I alter this recording option on my admin account, when a normal user account logs in, the setting is back to default.

I thought I had success with using Cameyo to package CamStudio as a virtual application, but then discovered a file move error when trying to save a recording, when I set the Region of Recording to 'Window', which I believe if I change the option from allow users to choose what the file name is called, to just save it automatically as date/time etcetera this would probably get around the problem, but when I try to repackage CamStudio as a virtual application, it never saves this change.

Just wondering if anyones successfully deployed it to a lot of computers and wondering how you did it. I'm working in a school environment, a mix of Windows 7 32bit and 64bit computers.

Thanks,

Among having just plain old fun using camstudio,
(yes I already got the "LET'S RECORD EVERYTHING!!! 8D" out of my system),
I've also decided to use it to record my "adventures" as a moderator on a Minecraft server (can't argue with a video!).
But when I watch the playback, the video looks like I recorded my screen while lagging horrendously, when Minecraft actually runs just fine for me (despite the server being in another country).
When I checked to see if it was just with Minecraft or not, it sort of was and sort of wasn't -- by which I mean that the video looked fine, though not completely smooth (yet not at all annoyingly choppy).

Now, I did start to check out some of the tutorials on the YouTube thing, but the ones I looked at didn't seem to have anything to do with video playback speeds. Maybe I just don't know how to look for the right videos. xD

So here's the two-part problem:
I don't understand technical jargon, and I want to know how to make the video look "smoother".

Yes, you have one of THOSE silly simple-terms-only alien people here. :P

For example: I only that fps is frames per second and that each image is a frame.
I'm not even sure what exactly a "frame" for an image is. xD
And is fps the same as frame rate? Because, you know, rate, speed, all that....
MILES PER HOUR!!! Yeah, I dunno either. XD

Anyway, I'm really sorry for the trouble, but could someone please tell me in simple normal weird person terms if there is a setting to fix it and if so how to make the video look smoother?

Also, while I'm at it:
when I have camstudio open it messes up my navigation on Minecraft.
I don't mean to say that it makes me go left when I press down, but it has the same effect as if the key "stuck", and sometimes it takes me multiple
tries of bashing the key to get it to "unstick"; I know it's camstudio because I don't have that problem when I don't have camstudio open.
And it happens sometimes (albeit much less) if I have camstudio open but not in use.
Is there something I can do to fix that?]]>

Using x264VFW captures in Vegas Pro http://www.camstudio.org/forum/discussion/1263/using-x264vfw-captures-in-vegas-pro Wed, 03 Apr 2013 16:03:01 -0400 SethB 1263@/forum/discussions
It turns out that the issue identified in this thread was correct: http://camstudio.org/forum/discussion/comment/5189#Comment_5189

Vegas can't decode x264 in an AVI wrapper. But, it does just fine with x264 in an MP4 wrapper.

f you go into the x264vfw configuration, specify Output | Output Mode | File. I set VFW FourCC at x264, but this may not be needed outside of AVI.

Then, in the Output section, specify a path and filename.mp4.

Capture with your favorite settings. When you stop the recording, CamStudio will prompt for an AVI filename. This file is created, but isn't playable. Look for your mp4; it worked well for me in Vegas Pro 10. Note that any more caps are likely to overwrite your first cap - rename it, or spec a new filename.

Vegas Pro doesn't recognize it. Does anyone know of a codec that has the excellent quality/small file size of this codec but is recognized by Vegas. Vegas does recognize other h.264 files. In fact, if I take the one from CamStudio and convert it to another h.264 in Any Video Converter, Vegas likes it.

It would be nice not to need to do the intermediate step. Any ideas???

Best codec and settings for internal business software training? http://www.camstudio.org/forum/discussion/1206/best-codec-and-settings-for-internal-business-software-trainings Wed, 06 Feb 2013 15:47:29 -0500 darkmoebius 1206@/forum/discussions
I have several departments in our company that need to record training videos of our ERP software. We need to balance file size against resolution and smoothness of movement. The CamStudio lossless codec is awesome, but the files are too large for the amount and length of videos we need to record. But, viewers also need to be able to clearly see and read everything in the video of a desktop/app. All our PC's are running Windows 8 Pro, 86-Bit

Any advice is greatly appreciated as to which codec and settings for video would produce and acceptable result. ]]>
Isn't the shockwave Flash file, outdated? http://www.camstudio.org/forum/discussion/1196/isnt-the-shockwave-flash-file-outdateds Tue, 29 Jan 2013 22:37:28 -0500 3dwizzard 1196@/forum/discussions
Like x264.
I'm generating smaller file sizes, with better quality.

Loop Insert .zip

Loop Insert 2.zip

The Loop Insert .zip is the shockwave file.
Extract the Loop insert folder, to your desktop. Double click on the folder, and double-click on the HTML file.

The Loop Insert 2 .zip is the x264 encoded file.
On my XP machine, I don't even have to extract it. And it plays fine.

Both are recorded at 12 80 x 7 20. Best viewed in full screen.

Makes me wonder why?
I'd like to hear some responses on this.]]>
Is anyone using camstudio for education/lecture capture? http://www.camstudio.org/forum/discussion/1168/is-anyone-using-camstudio-for-educationlecture-captures Fri, 04 Jan 2013 05:42:36 -0500 marxjohnson 1168@/forum/discussions I work for OSS Watch, the open source advisory service for UK education based at the University of Oxford.

As part of our work, we're producing a list of open source alternatives[1] to proprietary applications that are of use to educational institutions.

I've included CamStudio on the list as I can see it being a useful tool for recording demos or simple lecture capture. Where possible, I'm trying to include real-world examples of software on the list. Is anyone here using CamStudio in this way, and would be willing to share a bit of information with me for the document?

I saw mention of needing the 2012 version of C++, but my PC shows 7 different versions in the programs list, including multiples of 2005, 2008, and 2010 versions.
